Owanto by Professor Louise Sherman and Owanto

Owanto means La Femme, the woman. She is a powerful soul in search of the spiritual nature of life. Beyond her outward appearance lies a profound need to remain in touch with the inner light. It translates in her art into an intense search for spiritual union with the Absolute.

Owanto sees a woman as a source of life, a Giver of Light. “It is within the universal power of femininity to look for a sacred connection. We cannot be givers until we know ourselves and have something meaningful to give.”

She endorses the advice of great philosophers through the ages -‘know thyself’- inviting us to journey within, and discover ourselves.

“We have to know what we are and who we are, in order to grow.”

One day I learned that I had to care for myself just as well as I cared for my children. Pleasing loved ones to the extent of losing my own identity had often left me with a feeling of emptiness instead of fulfilment.

I came to understand that, for a Giver of Light, giving comes from inner happiness and calmness. From here I could radiate love and compassion and thus become an inspiration to others. I became aware that love is our essential nature.

Yet, the heart requires understanding – a practice of balancing oneself with others,
the inner with the outer, the giver with the receiver.
