This is a transitional piece and is the start of a different path…from here Owanto’s vision changes and deepens and finds a metaphysical plane to explore. Assisted by the workers at the Foundry Pietrasanta, the piece “Mother and Child” was enlarged and opened up a new series of thoughts, primarily the love for one’s children, itself an incredibly personal issue. Whilst sculpting the original clay model, Owanto’s attention or consciousness was often arrested by the shape the clay was taking, to be later immortalised in bronze – mirroring the indestructible quality of the relationship with children, of unconditional love.

The artistic language used shares a similarity with Owanto’s paintings. Both use a code from the world inside us, tapping out a code of a spiritual life and its joy and the amazing colours correspond to the different states of the soul.

The metallic structures used to form a support for the clay were to become a new series of work, both conceptually and aesthetically, that invites the viewer to feel this universal love for children but also invites the viewer to contemplate the source of such a deep love. This process of “travelling in reverse” ‘- is exciting for Owanto as behind our eartly encarnation is a spriritual world which is as indestructible as bronze.
